چکیده

Continuous analysis of the 13C/12C ratio of atmospheric CO2 (δC-CO2) is a powerful tool to quantify CO2 flux strengths of the two major ecosystem processes assimilation and respiration. Traditional laboratory techniques such as isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) in combination with flask sampling are subject to technical limitations that do not allow to fully characterize variations of atmospheric δC-CO2 at all relevant timescales. In our study we demonstrate the strength of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in combination with a PLS-based calibration strategy for online analysis of δ13CCO2 in ambient air. The ability of the instrument to measure δC-CO2 was tested on a grassland field-site and compared to standard laboratory-based IRMS measurements made on field-collected flask samples. Both methods were in excellent agreement with an average difference of 0.4 ‰ (n = 81). Simultaneously, other important trace gases such as CO, N2O and CH4 were analysed by FTIR spectroscopy.

Environmental forcing does not induce diel or synoptic variation in the carbon isotope content of forest soil respiration

Recent studies have examined temporal fluctuations in the amount and carbon isotope content (δC) of CO2 produced by the respiration of roots and soil organisms. These changes have been correlated with diel cycles of environmental forcing (e.g., sunlight and soil temperature) and with synoptic-scale atmospheric motion (e.g., rain events and pressure-induced ventilation). We used an extensive sui...

Emission evaluation of CO2 and CH4 gases in the selected gas pressure booster station in the Bangestan field of the National Iranian Oil Company

Background: Iran is located in the seventh rank in terms of CO2 emissions resulting from the fuel combustion in the world. Gas compressor booster stations, due to the several sources of contaminants, are causing the release of large amounts of CO2 and CH4, which will cause climate change therefore, estimating the emissions of the gases from oil and gas, different processing units are necessary....

Trade Openness and CO2 Emissions in Iran, 1971-2008

The increase of greenhouse gases (GHG) in which CO2 emissions constitute the principal component, is of major environmental problems of all societies. Economic growth impels intensive use of resources and as a result, more residues and wastes thrown in the nature that could lead to environmental degradation. This article tries to trace the eventual relationship between trade openness and enviro...

Purified and Functionalized MWCNTs: Application In CO2/CH4 Separation Using Mixed Matrix Membranes

To fabricate a defect free and high performance mixed matrix membrane (MMM), one approach is the functionalization of inorganic nanofillers (as dispersed phase) in the organic polymer matrix (as continuous phase) to modify the interactions between two phases.  For this purpose,, raw multi-walled carbon nanotubes (rMWCNTs) were purified by acid mixture (HNO3/H2SO<sub...

Carbon isotopes in mollusk shell carbonates

Mollusk shells contain many isotopic clues about calcification physiology and environmental conditions at the time of shell formation. In this review, we use both published and unpublished data to discuss carbon isotopes in both bivalve and gastropod shell carbonates. Land snails construct their shells mainly from respired CO2, and shell δC reflects the local mix of C3 and C4 plants consumed. S...
